Chapter 24
Brian and Bill stepped out of the car in an old black dirt driveway next to a rusty metal chain link fence that encircled a small house. The gate screeched loudly as it opened, the timeworn hinges rubbing together. The cement pathway through the front yard was faded and pockmarked, and some of the edges had broken off. When the men reached the wooden porch, it creaked and sank as they walked on it. The peeling yellow walls and the door’s evanescent white paint made the building seem like a worn-out sweater, gradually unravelling at the seams. Some of the siding dangled off of the building, and the walls were covered in dark scratches. The gray metal screen door squealed in protest as Bill pulled it open.
Brian knocked on the inner door with his clenched fist. Even though he knocked lightly, his hand meeting with the solid wood produced a cacophonous pounding.
Someone pulled the wooden slab inward a few seconds later. A pretty brunette woman stared quizzically at the killers on her porch. Her straight hair hung past her shoulders, and it looked unkempt. She had a feminine face; straight, smooth eyebrows, subtly pouty lips, bright eyes. Her brown irises had a faded hue. She had soft-looking skin with hardly any blemishes, and was very thin. Her sheer white sleeveless shirt didn’t leave much to the imagination. On her lower body, she was covered by nothing other than small tight white underwear, with a pink and yellow flower on the front, and a pink waistband. Her clothes looked lived-in. She was barefoot, and had small shapely curves, easily discernible through her outfit.
“Hi?” the girl greeted the men questioningly. She rubbed her tired eyes, absent-mindedly twirling her hair.
Bill and Brian checked her out as Bill talked. “Hi Miss, where’s Chuck?” His tone was polite but firm.
“He’s not here,” she answered automatically. “Who are you?”
“May we come in?” Brian asked rhetorically. He weaved past her, ignoring her question.
“Hey!” she exclaimed, her attitude shifting from curiosity to shock that bordered on outrage. “What are you doing?”
“Close the door,” Bill ordered her, stepping inside the house. “I’ll check upstairs.” While he headed in that direction, he called out to Brian, who was already searching the first floor.
“Excuse me!” the irritated girl yelled, following the killer who was surveying her kitchen and fumbling through her belongings. She tried to get his attention, to no avail. “I’m gonna call the police if you don’t tell me who you guys are right now!”
“We’re dangerous men with guns, bitch,” Brian maliciously reacted, unbuttoning his suit jacket and pulling out his .357 Magnum. “And our boss owns the police. That’s all you need to know.” He shoved his gun into her forehead, maintaining composure in spite of his threats.
The terrified woman cringed and whimpered as the weapon pushed her against the kitchen sink. “Okay! Okay!” she cried.
“Where is he?!” the powerful man shouted in her face, pressing the pistol harder into her head and becoming monstrous.
“I don’t know!” she replied in a shrill voice, tears streaming down her beautiful face. Her gaze darted to the window behind her and to her left. “He was gone when I got up to answer the door!”
Brian glanced in the same direction as her. “What were you just looking at? Did he fucking run!?” Shoving his .357 into her forehead, his face was only a few inches away from her own. “Don’t fucking lie to me!”
The defenceless woman’s hands shot up in surrender. “Okay!” she sobbed, petrified. “He ran. Please don’t kill me! I’m so sorry!”
The frightening criminal lowered his Magnum and sprinted to the staircase next to the front entryway. “Bill! The motherfucker bolted! Lock this chick in the car and follow the alley behind the house. I’m going after him.”
“All right!” he answered, rushing down the stairs.
The traumatized girl collapsed against the cupboard below the sink. She was overwhelmingly horrified and astonished. Her small body wracked with quiet sobs, and her head was buried in her hands that rested on her bent knees.
Brian holstered his weapon, cautiously approaching the terrorized woman. He knelt down in front of her and said in a calm and reassuring tone, “We’re not going to hurt you. I promise.”
He gently lifted her head to look into her eyes. She could see the apologetic concern on his face. “Just tell us where he went.”
“I don’t know,” she responded pleadingly, her eyes leaking tears. She sniffled, and her body shuddered a few more times before she continued. “We were chilling on the couch, and when we heard a knock on the door this early, Charlie got suspicious. He looked out the window and guessed that you guys were looking for him. He just snuck out the back door and got as far away from here as possible. He didn’t tell me where he was going. I swear. He didn’t want me to be able to tell you.”
The girl’s pathetic demeanour made both criminals believe her. “All right,” Bill said, moving from his lean against the kitchen entryway. “I’ll take her to the car, circle around to the other end of the alley, and head down that way. You better get going.”
“Yeah.” Brian agreed. “I’ll keep you posted.”
The killers went their separate ways. Brian sprang from the back door, sprinting down the alley. Bill gently pulled the frightened girl off of the floor and marched her to his Chevelle. She gingerly sat in the back, and he climbed into the driver’s seat. He locked the doors and windows, then moved the car onto the road and turned right, heading to the far end of the alley.
