Mindgasms Book Club Chat with Tristram Johnson and the Woke Centrist on The Hero of Ages, book 3 in era 1 of the Mistborn series, by Brandon Sanderson. The Mistborn/killer with magic powers named Vin has to figure out how to stop Ruin, the evil God that she accidentally released from The Well of Ascension at the end of the previous book of the same name. Elend, her husband and leader of the empire, has to help her while stopping war and also learning to adapt to ruling in a more ruthless way. The shape-shifting immortal named Tensoon defies his leaders and helps Vin try to defeat Ruin. Sazed, who studies religion, is trying to figure out Vin’s role in religious myths as he grieves the death of his girlfriend, and ends up being involved in them himself even more than her in the end. An original member of the heist crew that Vin was involved with years ago, named Spook, has aspects of his past revealed that connect him more to the larger themes in the plot. Also, has Kelsier, the dead leader of the slave rebellion that Vin joined, been resurrected as a God to manipulate events? Another secondary character in Kelsier’s crew was Marsh, who is being possessed by Ruin. We also get into the grand cosmic role that Ruin played throughout the entire series, along with Preservation, the more good God/cosmic force, and how they have booth been manipulating characters and events. We discuss the different ways that Brandon Sanderson explores the concepts of Gods and cosmic forces in these novels, along with the unexpected ways in which the Hero’s journey is fulfilled, involving one of the secondary characters even more so than the main protagonists. Also, we talk about the constraints of Ruin and Preservation’s powers, and how the ability of free will that is a key aspect of humanity allows Preservation to achieve its goal of humans stopping Ruin from destroying all human life, by balancing Ruin and Preservation.

Mindgasms Book Chat with Tristram Johnson and the Woke Centrist on The Well of Ascension, book 2 in era 1 of the Mistborn trilogy, by Brandon Sanderson. We talk about the fantasy killers with magic powers, called mistborn or mistings, the growing of influence of gods and religion in this fantasy world, how rulers take over control and manage an empire, juggle that with an impending war, and engage in political schemes to maintain power and avoid a hostile takeover. Also, we get into the awesome battles with magic powers, and compare Mistborn to other series within Brandon Sanderson’s Cosmere, like The Stormlight Archive, and Elantris. We compare Mistborn to other fantasy series as well, including The Wheel of Time, Lord of the Rings, First Law, The Dresden Files, and A Song of Ice Fire/Game of Thrones. The parallels between some aspects of Mistborn and the real world are also covered, like relationships, religion, and introversion vs. extroversion:
