Phoenix gives an amazing performance as the rejected and mentally ill clown and aspiring comedian who gets rejected and bullied, then becomes a violent murderer who inspires people to start a cult based on him. This is the origin story of the Joker villain from the Batman DC universe, and is the most financially successful r-rated “superhero” movie. It also is very different for Todd Phillips, who is normally a comedy director, and made the Hangover films. Dusty and I compare Joaquin Phoenix’s performance to that of Heath Ledger in the Dark Knight, and discuss the many direct parallels between Joker and Taxi Driver, which is interesting because the star of that, Robert Deniro, is also in this movie.
