Newest Mindgasms Book Club Chat with Parker and the Woke Centrist on Dune, the classic science fiction/fantasy novel by Frank Herbert about Paul Atreides, a Duke’s son who becomes the Duke, then fulfills a prophecy and becomes the messiah who unties the tribal dessert Fremen against the Emperor of the intergalactic empire. There are power struggles between House Atreides of Paul’s parents, and House Harkonnen. Paul’s mother named Jessica has basically the equivalent of magic powers, and has secretly had a major influence on Paul’s bloodline. The struggle for power between House Harkonnen and House Atreides largely has to do with control of what is known as spice, or melange, on the planet called Arrakis, also known as Dune. The Fremen culture who Paul unites have influence over the massive sandworms that produce the spice or melange. The reason that there is such a huge power struggle over control of the spice is that people use it as fuel for spaceships in interstellar travel. It also is a drug that be consumed to get you high, it extends your life, and it can potentially give you the magic power of prescience, which is the ability to see multiple possible outcomes in the future. In addition to the book, we compare it to and explain how it has influenced other science fiction and fantasy novels, movies and shows like Star Wars, Star Trek and Wheel of time. We get into what are essentially prostitutes with sexual superpowers called the Honored Matres, and discuss how the first Dune book is connected to others in the original series by Frank Herbert, along with the prequels written posthumously by his son, Brian Herbert. We also somehow go off on several long tangents about subjects like reality T.V., Kim Kardashian’s sex tape, Kayne West, Lady Gaga, and sketchy drugs that people have created like huffing helium from balloons, sniffing glue, and jenkem, which is a drug involving huffing the fumes of fermented shit.

Check out my Mindgasms Book Chat with Tristram Johnson and the Woke Centrist on The Well of Ascension, book 2 in era 1 of the Mistborn trilogy, by Brandon Sanderson. We talk about the fantasy killers with magic powers, called mistborn or mistings, the growing of influence of gods and religion in this fantasy world, how rulers take over control and manage an empire, juggle that with an impending war, and engage in political schemes to maintain power and avoid a hostile takeover. Also, we get into the awesome battles with magic powers, and compare Mistborn to other series within Brandon Sanderson’s Cosmere, like The Stormlight Archive, and Elantris. We compare Mistborn to other fantasy series as well, including The Wheel of Time, Lord of the Rings, First Law, The Dresden Files, and A Song of Ice Fire/Game of Thrones. The parallels between some aspects of Mistborn and the real world are also covered, like relationships, religion, and introversion vs. extroversion:
